General Bridges about the invasion in Russia i january 1919

When General Bridges, the officer who oversaw the withdrawal of the Military Mission from Novorossisk, came to record his evaluation of the British intervention in Russia's civil war, expressed himself with simple clarity. 'From time immemorial the classic penalty for mixing in a family quarrel had beena thick ear, and our ill-staged interference in Russian civil war cost us some thousands of British solders' lives and L100.000.000 in money, while we earned the bitter enmity of the Russian people for atleast a decade..... On the credit side I can think of nothing.

Lloyd George TO Winston Churchill

"I vonder whether it is any use making one last efford to induce you to throw off this obsession which, if you will forgive my for saying so, is upsetting your ballance. I again ask you to let Russia be, at any rate for a few days, and to concentrate your mind on the quite unjustifiable expenditure in France. at home and in the East, incurred by both War Office and the Air Department. Some of the items could not possible have been tolerated by you if you had given one-fifth of the thought to these which you have devoted to Russia"

David Lloyd George to Winston Churschill
